HSA/FSA and Massage Therapy
If you participate in a Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account, your tax-free contributions to the plan can be used for qualified medical expenses that are not normally covered by health insurance. You may be eligible for reimbursement through your HSA or FSA with a prescription for massage therapy.
How is Massage Therapy Eligible?
The IRS ruling states that medical care expenses must be primarily to alleviate or prevent a physical or mental ailment. Examples of illnesses that qualify include carpal tunnel syndrome, stress, back pain, fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression and pain management.
How to get HSA/FSA Approval for Massage Therapy:
First, we recommend that you check with your company’s health benefits co-ordinator to see if your plan allows for Therapeutic Massage.
Next, contact your medical doctor’s office and let them know that you have HSA/FSA funds that you would like to use for massage therapy for treatment/prevention of your condition.
Your physician will need to provide three pieces of information on the prescription:
- Medical necessity: why you need massage therapy (example: to relieve back pain)
- Frequency: number of sessions per month (example: minimum of two sessions per month)
- Duration: length of treatment (example: 12 months)
Once you’ve obtained the prescription, you can contact us to make your massage appointment. After your first massage we will email your invoice/receipt so that you can be reimbursed for your treatment.
Can I use HSA/FSA funds to pay for tips/gratuity?
No, by law you cannot use these funds for tips/gratuity.
